When should you replace your DTT antenna? 5 warning signs

May 2026 Ismael Antenista Valencia 7 min read

The DTT antenna is one of those things we don't pay attention to until something goes wrong. In this article I share, from my experience as an antenna installer in Valencia, the 5 clearest signs that your antenna needs checking, repairing or replacing.

The picture pixelates or freezes frequently

If your TV picture breaks up, pixelates or freezes repeatedly — especially in windy or rainy weather — it is a very clear sign that the antenna is damaged or misaligned. This symptom means the signal reaching your TV is weak or unstable.

💡 Fact: In Valencia, the Levante wind and summer storms are the main causes of antennas losing alignment or suffering damage to their elements.

Channels are missing or keep disappearing

If when you scan for channels some are missing, or channels you previously had have disappeared, it could be due to several factors: changes in DTT broadcast frequencies, a damaged antenna or a faulty amplifier. Since 2022, the DTT network has undergone several frequency retuning exercises in the Valencia region, which has meant many antennas have needed realigning.

💡 Tip: Before calling an installer, try a fresh channel scan from your TV menu. If it still doesn't work, the problem is with the antenna.

The antenna has been installed for more than 10 years

DTT antennas have an estimated service life of between 10 and 15 years, depending on material quality and weather conditions. In coastal areas like Valencia, the humidity and salt in the air accelerate the deterioration of metal components. An old antenna may seem to work fine and yet deliver a lower-quality signal.

💡 Fact: If your antenna was installed before 2015 and hasn't been checked since, a preventive inspection could save you problems down the line.

The cabling is deteriorated or there is damp

The problem is not always the antenna itself. The coaxial cable running from the antenna to the TV can crack, oxidise or deteriorate internally over the years, especially where it passes through exposed areas or where water ingress has occurred. A damaged cable causes signal loss even when the antenna is in perfect condition.

💡 Tip: If you can see the external cable is visibly damaged, crushed or cut, it is very likely the source of the signal problem.

The amplifier won't power on or keeps failing

Many shared installations — blocks of flats, apartment buildings — have an amplifier that boosts the signal for distribution to all floors. If the amplifier fails, all residents lose their signal or receive poor-quality signal at the same time. It is one of the most common faults we deal with in Valencia.

💡 Fact: A faulty amplifier affects the whole building. If several neighbours have the same problem at the same time, the amplifier is almost certainly to blame, not the individual antennas.

Should you repair or replace the DTT antenna?

It is not always necessary to replace the whole antenna. In many cases, realigning it, replacing the amplifier or repairing the cabling is enough. A professional diagnosis at your Valencia property pinpoints exactly what is failing and gives you the most accurate quote.

In our experience: more than 60% of DTT antenna faults in Valencia are resolved without replacing the complete antenna. Realignment, amplifier replacement or cable repair are the most common solutions.
  • Pixelated or frozen picture — especially in wind or rain
  • Missing channels — or some have disappeared after a scan
  • Antenna over 10 years old — not checked since installation
  • Deteriorated cabling — cracks, cuts or visible damp
  • Faulty amplifier — several neighbours affected at the same time
